Christmas begins with the Oxford Street Lights Switch-On

Christmas only truly begins once the iconic Oxford Street lights have been switched on. This year the switch-on took place on 6th November and for the first time in history the whole street closed to traffic to allow for a real festive celebration. The lights feature 1,778 snowball-shaped decorations lit with thousands of LED lightbulbs and this year singer Craig David did the honours of pressing the on switch.
To recognise the spirit of giving and charity at Christmas, Oxford Street has teamed up with the NSPCC this year and you can donate just £5 to have a star-shaped light dedicated to someone special in your life. All donations go straight to the NSPCC Little Stars Campaign.

Browse the Biggest and Best Christmas Windows

Oxford Street is home to many of the UK’s best known high street brands and departments stores and you can be sure their windows are dressed to perfection. As you stroll down the street keep an eye out for the most festive delights.

Selfridges were the first shop to unveil their Christmas windows this year and with a fun and frisky party theme their windows are packed with partying Santa, 72,000 individual sequins and 114,00 baubles. All twelve windows feature Jolly Old St. Nick in various poses and guises, celebrating in style and bringing out the festive cheer.

John Lewis give you a chance to feel even closer to Buster the Boxer, star of their iconic Christmas TV advert. Their Oxford Street shop features a theme all around Buster and his playful, cheeky nature.
As you browse the windows it can’t hurt to pop inside and do a little shopping, securing some truly original London-themed Christmas gifts. With the vast array of shops it isn’t difficult to get all those gifts ticked off the list and if you time it right you can avoid the hustle and bustle of the crowds.

Dine in Style with a Festive Twist
Oxford Street may be all about the shops but there are plenty of nearby eateries and hidden rooftop bars you won’t want to miss. John Lewis’ rooftop is home to the atmospheric Gardening Society Roof Garden which has a very special winter menu and amazing festive forest décor. Another rooftop offers equally breath-taking décor and wintry meals, over at Selfridges Forest Restaurant and Bar. The forest theme is once again strong with a festive accent and food has an appealing Christmassy feel.
