Just because the long, balmy, sunny evenings are finally making their timid return, doesn’t mean we have to spend every second of the night in beer gardens or rooftop bars - you can still be cultural and curious while relaxing high up above the city this summer.
With a host of open-air cinema projections being screened all over London, here’s just a selection that will be happening within strolling distance of Amba Hotel Charing Cross.
There are four locations hosting the Rooftop Film Club this year, one of which is this centrally and beautifully located rooftop in Kensington. Screening classic, cult and recent releases, the team behind the Rooftop Film Club have really got the open-air movie magic sussed, laying on food and drinks, blankets, waterproof ponchos (it’s still Britain, don’t forget) and wireless headphones.
One of the highlights of every Londoner’s summer, Film4 Summer Screen is returning to its seasonal home in the iconic courtyard of Somerset House, offering a picture-perfect way to spend a scenic summer evening. So perfect in fact, that half the screenings have already sold out so make sure you book your tickets soon! Just pack your own picnic and blanket and make a proper al fresco night of it - with surround sound, the largest screen in London and a repertoire of cult and classic hits making this a top contender for London’s favourite summer cinema experience. Each night DJs will also be playing in the courtyard before the film is shown, and ‘Beside the Screen' talks provide insight with directors, actors and industry insiders giving talks.
If you’re open to venturing a little out of the centre of the city, Pop Up Screens will be touring all corners of London, stretching from beautiful Blackheath to Coram's Fields in Holborn, Manor House Gardens in Lewisham and Wormholt Park in Hammersmith. This is a great way to explore those parts of London you might not otherwise get to, and the films themselves are all guaranteed crowd-pleasers.
Also popping up in some of the best open spaces in London is the return of the Nomad Cinema experience. From Brompton Cemetery, the Royal Academy of the Arts, Grosvenor Square to the Lido in Hyde Park, these screenings gain access to some curious but inspired locations. Conceived in partnership with the much-loved Lexi cinemas, the proceeds go to charity and on-hand will be blankets, street food stalls and films ranging from classics such as Psycho and The Breakfast Club to last year’s Inside Out, Mad Max: Fury Road and pretty much all the genres in between.
So now that we’ve sorted your summer screen nights, all you have to do is make it home afterwards to your super comfy room at Amba Hotel Charing Cross for some more star-spotting of your own!
