Christmas shopping can, occasionally, have its downsides. Busy streets, overheated stores and failure to find the perfect present can be a little trying. But not at these London establishments. Home to some of the biggest and best festive displays you’ll see anywhere in the world, London’s hottest shopping spots will have you entranced by beautifully crafted installations and covetable Christmas treats.
Selfridges Christmas windows are a London classic, and this year they were the first department store in the world to reveal their displays as early as October. The ‘With Love From’ theme this year tells the story of a Christmas parade, with festive characters (including Father Christmas, of course) carrying embroidered flags and performing cheering ditties for the crowds of happy shoppers. This year the biggest triple sided windows featured a gobsmacking ten Santa figures! Head back to the London store at the end of November to see the second set of windows unveiled.
With its magisterial Tudor beams, iconic polished wood floors and enchanting Christmas shop, Liberty is much more than a store – it’s an institution. This year the windows are characterised by the excitement of “The Night Before Christmas”, with displays featuring snowy roof tops, twinkling lights, rich green foliage and plenty of red ribbon. The products in the windows change on a bi-weekly basis, and Father Christmas is in-store to say hello to visiting children every Sunday from the 19th November until 10th December.
In explosion of colour, glitter and excitement, Harvey Nichols has pushed the boat out with a high-energy Christmas celebration. Bold textures and graphics, stars, lights, disco balls and holographic patterns will get passers-by well and truly in the mood for festive parties. Janet Wardley, Head of Visual Display at Harvey Nichols, explained in an interview that the iconic store was keen not to dwell on the uncertain times of the current climate, but wanted to use “dazzling colours, lights and shapes” to entertain customers. Some of the vinyls used in the display are apparently so bright that team members had to wear sunglasses while creating the installation!
Fortnum & Mason
This Piccadilly department store is British luxury embodied. With the window arches painted in signature F&M greens and golds and Christmas trees dotted along the roof, the shopfront makes for quite the festive spectacle. In 2017, Fortnum & Mason reminds us that “Together We’re Merrier” with a continuous eight-window narrative. The display shows animals and objects coming to life and working together to make Christmas magical. One window features a delivery of the famous F&M hamper – you’ll be tempted to nip inside and choose one for yourself!
Harrods’ successful partnership with Burberry for last year’s “A Very British Fairy Tale” theme is succeeded by a festive trip to Italy for some styling from the undisputed Italian fashion kings Dolce & Gabbana. If you’re enticed by the luxury goods featured in the “Dolce & Gabbana workshops” window displays complete with Sicilian-style puppets, venture inside and visit the Italian Market on the fourth floor.
