A new pop-up music residency has opened in hip and trendy Shoreditch, offering an incredibly eclectic range of sounds curated by some of the biggest names in the record industry.

And yes, we do mean the ‘record industry’. Spiritland at Merchant’s Tavern, is all about vinyl collections, with guest DJs covering music as diverse as Turkish psychedelic folk rock, Country & Western, righteous dub reggae, Rockabilly, disco, punk, soul, funk, indie, synth pop – and everything inbetween. There’s even a night devoted to Prince, taking in deep album cuts, Prince productions, collaborations and covers.

The brainchild of radio producer Paul Noble and restaurateurs Patrick Calyton Malone and Dominic Lake, Spiritland runs from now until the start of January at the Merchant’s Tavern – which also happens to boast an amazing menu created by the UK’s leading female chef, Angela Hartnett.

Enjoy one of the Merchant’s Tavern’s celebrated cocktails – Go Hartnett Or Go Home (Buffalo Trace, Antica Formula, Dry Curacao, Pomegranate Reduction, anyone?) – while listening to music on the venue’s world-class hi-fi system.

Upcoming guest residents include:-

Dan Beaumont & Charlie PorterOrganisers of gay techno party Chapter 10

And don’t just take our word for it. Music enthusiasts site Gigwise has this to say: “Spiritland is the kind of place where you can settle in and enjoy some truly exceptional albums, playing on vinyl over a stunning Tannoy sound system.” Time Out adds: “They’ve compiled a swoon-worthy selection of vinyl, got a sound system to make audiophiles go weak at the knees.”

Incredibly, entrance is free every day, although given the line-up of guest DJs, we’d recommend getting there early.

Spiritland takes place at Merchant’s Tavern, 36 Charlotte Street, London EC2A 3PG and runs until January 1st.

To get there from Amba Hotel Charing Cross takes less than 30 minutes on the tube. Jump onto the District East Line at Embankment (which is around the corner from Amba Hotel Charing Cross) and hop off at Whitechapel. From there it’s a quick overground train journey to Shoreditch High Street.
